Rev. Kokyo Henkel trained for 19 years in residence at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center (most recently as Tanto, or Head of Practice), Green Gulch Farm Zen Center, No Abode Hermitage in Mill Valley, and Bukkokuji Monastery in Japan. He was ordained as a Zen priest in 1994 by Tenshin Reb Anderson, receiving Dharma Transmission from him in 2010. He served as Head of Practice at Tassajara and Head Teacher of the Santa Cruz Zen Center. Kokyo has also been practicing with the Tibetan Dzogchen (“Great Perfection”) Teacher Tsoknyi Rinpoche since 2003, in California, Colorado, and Kathmandu.
The founder of Soto Zen in Japan, Dogen Zenji, writes that all buddhas and Zen ancestors are expressing a dream within a dream and that “every dewdrop manifested in every realm is a dream. This dream is the glowing clarity of the hundred grasses.” This Dharma talk given by Visiting Teacher Kokyo Henkel is the opening class in our 5-day Meditation & Study Sesshin on this fascicle by Dogen Zenji.
Dharma talks by Zen teachers are a traditional method of transmitting the heart and understanding of Buddha’s Way. Public Dharma talks are offered as part of our Saturday morning program. Everyone is welcome to attend.
