Myokei Lynda Caine-Barrett, Shonin became the first American woman to complete Shingyo Dojo, the training monastery of Nichiren Shu. She was also the first woman of African-Japanese descent to be ordained as a priest in the Nichiren Shu Order. She serves as resident priest of Myoken-ji Temple and leads the Nichiren Buddhist Sangha of Texas. Myokei, Shonin also serves as bishop of the Nichiren Shu Order of North America.

Active in prison ministry, she supports two sanghas and assorted individuals throughout the Texas prison system. She also works with hospice care and the veterans’ program Healing Warrior Hearts.
