Memorial Services for our Departed Friends & Family

In Memory of René van Zanten, who passed from this world on August 21st, 2020

We will be offering a memorial service for sangha member Catherine van Zanten’s husband René, who passed away from Covid on August 21st. Rene was born in Indonesia and was three-quarters Japanese and one-quarter Dutch. He later lived in The Netherlands and then immigrated to the US. He had a career as an oil and gas lawyer and loved to play tennis and chess. He also loved to read World War II history and sometimes wished he had become a history teacher instead of a lawyer. He was intelligent and well read and enjoyed classical music, especially Mozart. He was 76 years old when he passed in the nursing home.

A Memorial Ceremony will be held at AZC (on ZOOM) on Wednesday, September 9th at 6:45 pm. We will be chanting the Dai Hi Shin Darani of Great Compassion.

In Memory of Fred Shoemaker, who passed from this world on August 5th, 2020

In late July, Onryu Shoemaker’s father Fred was taken to the hospital in San Antonio due to lung inflammation and difficulty breathing (not Covid), potentially due to lung scarring from exposure to things while working as an iron worker. While initially hopeful he might pull through, on August 4th things took a serious downhill turn, and on August 5th at 6:15pm Fred was taken off the ventilator (per his wishes) and allowed to pass. Thankfully Onryu was able to spend time with his family in San Antonio throughout this time.

A Memorial Ceremony will be held at AZC (on zoom) for Fred Shoemaker on Wednesday, September 23rd at 6:45 pm, 49 days following his passing.
