Annual Memorial Ceremony for AZC Founder Zenkei Hartman Roshi

Thursday, May 12th 2022 at 6:45pm

On Thursday, May 12th we will be holding our 6th Annual Memorial Service honoring Shunbo Zenkei, Blanche Hartman Roshi, the primary founder of the Austin Zen Center (Zenkei-ji).  Blanche Hartman passed from this world on May 13, 2016. A student of Suzuki Roshi, and given dharma transmission by Sojun Mel Weitsman, she was the first woman to be Abbot of San Francisco Zen Center. Trained in sewing Buddha’s robe by the Japanese nun Kasai Joshin she was for many, many years  the Sewing Teacher at SFZC, helping innumerable students to sew rakusu and okesa, and after stepping down as Abbess she disseminating this practice and teaching to affiliated sanghas far and wide. Through her disciples & dharma heirs (Flint Sparks, Barbara Seirin Kohn, & Kosho McCall), Zenkei Roshi was named the source founder of the Austin Zen Center in 2014.

For this ceremony we will be making the three kinds of offering as taught in Daśabhūmika-sūtra: (a) offerings of incense, flowers, food, light; (b) offerings of praise and reverence (by chanting sutras and sharing reflections on the deceased teachings); (c) offerings of right conduct (by practicing the Buddha’s way and living a wholesome life). This year we will chant the Names of Buddhas & Ancestors, the Women Ancestors and the Daihishin Dharani in gratitude for our lineage, our practice and our sangha. We will be joined by Blanche’s student, friend, and personal attendant through her final days, Rev. Daigan Gaither, who will be giving the Dharma talk and a workshop on Grief & Loss on the following Saturday.

In Soto Zen, anniversary memorial services (called nenkihoyo) are performed in order to support the deceased who have already gone to the pure land to continue walking on the path of the Buddha. These are often performed on the 100th day, 1st year, 3rd year, 7th, 13th, 17th, 23rd, 27th, and 33rd year after passing, although founders of temple will have annual services held well after that! For example, Dogen Zenji’s 750th Nenkihoyo was held in 2002. We acknowledge that performing such acts of shared gratitude also helps create a field of beneficence that extends mysteriously out to all beings.

**Registration Required** – Please register to either to receive the Zoom link or to let us know that you will be there in person.
