Taught by Rev. Choro Antonaccio
6 Thursday evenings 6:45 to 8 pm,
October 16, 23, November 6, 13, 20, December 4
Limited to 30 participants
Our annual practice period will focus on the theme of studying the self. Dogen said, “To study the Buddha way is to study the self. To study the self is to forget the self. To forget the self is to be actualized by myriad things. When actualized by myriad things, body and mind as well as the body and mind of others drop away.”
This quote is from his fundamental teaching – taking the form of advice to a lay follower – called Genjōkōan. The title could be translated as “manifest, express, share reality” and to harmonize equality and difference. During the eight weeks of Ango we will chant and study this text together, and study ourselves in the process.
Our main text for the class is the new book by Rev. Shinshu Roberts, Meeting the Myriad Things. We will endeavor to finish this book (approximately 3 short chapters a week) but will supplement with other excellent translations and commentaries by Shohaku Okumura, Suzuki Roshi, Sojun Mel Weitsman, and others. You may want to purchase the text and read the introduction at least before the first class.
Please commit to attending class in person or by Zoom. We will not record classes but I will share any notes. The fee for class is a set price, and not prorated by the number of sessions you attend. All fees go to support the temple. Dana to the teacher is welcome.
