Shunbo Zenkei Blanche Hartman was the primary founder of Austin Zen Center and the first woman appointed abbess of San Francisco Zen Center. A student of Suzuki Roshi, she received dharma transmission from Sojun Mel Weitsman and was trained as a sewing teacher by Japanese nun Kasai Joshin.
Zenkei Blanche Hartman inspired countless students and teachers in our lineage, including many of the early founders of AZC. Zenkeji (Inconceivable Joy) Temple was named in her honor.
To mark the 10th anniversary of the occasion of her death, we will have a ceremony of remembrance during morning service on Wednesday, May 13th. All are welcome.
