A group from AZC visited Tassajara for sangha week at the end of April. The beautiful, functional kitchen at Zen Mountain Monastery was a big focus for those on the Kitchen Committee. The scale is very different — in prime season, Tassajara is serving breakfast, lunch and dinner to 100 people a day, whereas a large group at Austin Zen might be thirty people for a few days at most. But the big kitchen’s simplicity and organization support the mindfulness of work practice in a way that’s applicable to a kitchen of any size. For example, spices, cooking pots and utensils are easily accessible on open shelves, and each has its appropriate place. The intention of the AZC kitchen remodel is to incorporate this wholehearted support of work practice here in Austin.
