Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, located deep in the Ventana Wilderness area of the Los Padres National Forest, southeast of Carmel California, is the oldest Sōtō Zen Buddhist monastery in the United States. Before and after the Summer Guest Season (Apr 25-Sep 9) the temple opens for a brief Work Period (when volunteers assist with the maintenance of Tassajara. These are energetic times with an emphasis on work practice and community living. The work day is 6 ½ hours both during work period as well as for Summer Students.)
The cloistered monastic Practice Period resumes in the Fall.
