This Very Mind is Buddha, a Genzo-e Sesshin with Rev. Kokyo Henkel

Thursday @ 6pm, April 25th - Sunday @ 5pm, April 28th

This Very Mind is Buddha
A 3-day Genzo-e Sesshin with Rev. Kokyo Henkel
Dogen Zenji writes, “Mind is mountains, rivers and the earth; mind is the sun, the moon, and the stars.” Genzo-e is a concentrated study retreat on a chapter of Dogen’s Shobogenzo. In this retreat we will investigate together “This Mind is Buddha” (Sokushin Zebutsu) and how to bring it alive in practice. Each day includes morning and afternoon talks by Kokyo.
Come explore the wondrous meaning and implications of Dogen Zenji’s profound writings with visiting teacher Rev. Kokyo Henkel as we embark on our Spring Practice Period together.

Schedule (Draft):

  • Thursday (eve): Oryoki Review @ 6:45pm/Orientation @ 7:30pm/Zazen @ 8pm
  • Friday-Saturday: 6am-8:45pm.
  • Sunday: 6am-5pm

Fri-Sun classes are tentatively set for 10-11:30am and 2:40-4:10pm. Retreat ends with closing circle and refuges at 4:30pm.

Rev. Kokyo Henkel began his Zen training at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center (most recently as Tanto, or Head of Practice), and has spent over 20 years there and at Green Gulch Farm Zen Center, No Abode Hermitage, and Bukkokuji Monastery in Japan. He was ordained as a priest in 1994 by Tenshin Reb Anderson, receiving Dharma Transmission from him in 2010. Kokyo is interested in exploring how the original teachings of Buddha-Dharma from ancient India, China, and Japan are still very much alive and useful in present-day America to bring peace and harmony to this troubled world.
