Join Unzan Mako Voelkel and other AZC sangha members for a unique opportunity to work and practice together at our parent temple in California, and to connect deeply to our social, cultural and religious heritage. Together we will be joining the Tassajara residents in the daily schedule of zazen, service, work, and meals. There are very limited spaces.
Fees for the week are $175/members, $250/nonmembers, plus airfare from AUS to SFO.
Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, located deep in the Ventana Wilderness area of the Los Padres National Forest, southeast of Carmel California, is the oldest Sōtō Zen Buddhist monastery in the United States. Following the Summer Guest Season the temple opens for a brief Work Period before the monastic Practice Period begins, when volunteers assist with the maintenance of Tassajara. These are energetic times with an emphasis on work practice and community living. The work day is 6 ½ hours. Vegetarian meals and shared accommodations are included. We will be working and meeting as a group while also joining residents in the daily schedule:
5:50am Wake-up bell
6:00am Zazen & Service
8:30am Work Meeting
1:00pm Work Meeting
4:30pm End Work/Bathe
5:50pm Evening Service
