Hello,
Chenrezig is the Buddha of Compassion. This is the way his name
is spoken in Tibetan. In Sanskrit we know him as Avalokiteshvara.
He is the source of at least two of the main chants that we do
at AZC: The Heart Sutra, and the Dharani of Great Compassion which
we call the Dai Hi Shin Dharani.
One of the principal forms of practice in Tibetan Buddhism is
called "sadhana" practice. Sadhana translates as: "path to
enlightenment". These kinds of practice usually involve a
visualization of a Buddha or Bodhisattva and the repetition of
a mantra. Chenrezig is often visualized with four arms or
1,000 arms. In each hand there is an object which symbolizes
a skillful device for liberation of sentientbeings.
These sadhanas are usually given by a teacher, a fully qualified
Lama, who blesses us to practice successfully. This blessing is
given during what is called an "empowerment" ceremony.
There will be an empowerment ceremony given to practice Chenrezig,
on Saturday evening, (5/3/07) at the Academy of Oriental Medicine,
on Anderson Lane. It begins at 7:30pm and will last untile 9:30 pm
There is an Alamo Drafthouse nearby. They said it would be held in
classroom B. I believe that it is free.
thank you
Rinshin Stopher
