I'm in Carmel Valley Village, picking up 150 gallons of gas for our fire pumps and various other supplies.
Fortunately, the lightning that was predicted for yesterday did not appear. We received word yesterday afternoon that there are 65 people coming in (30 inmates to cut fire lines, and 5 engines with crews). They will probably be at Tassajara by the time I get back at noon.
It appears that there is concern with the fire services that the fire will come into Carmel Valley, and the process of bulldozing the '77 fire lines is due to begin. They are going to clear around Jamesburg. We also heard that there are now 1000 fires in California.
It seems to me that this fire may be a long process--it creeps some days and moves fairly quickly on others. Some days are very smoky, and others are almost crystal clear. One sections of it is now in the Tassajara Creek headwaters, behind Church Creek Ranch, working its way down.
That's about all I have right now. Reliable information is difficult to come by, as we are told one thing, then another. Quite often we are relying on our own eyes, going up to the ridge twice a day to check out the conditions.
I'll write again when I can.
Colin
