Dear Alexandra:
As a chief negotiator for my college (a position from which I am now
retired), I had extensive training in "Interest Based Bargaining" based on
the book "Getting To Yes". It was very difficult to implement because both
the clerical and faculty unions were still wedded to a more confrontational
bargaining style. Three years ago, when I left the college, we were
negotiating with those unions on voluntarily receiving the training at
college expense. I hope this happened, but don't know since I felt that I
needed to fully "back-off" issues upon my retirement.
I learned the power and morality of this mediation type of technique (albeit
without a mediator) and think a similar style based in Buddhist doctrine
will be uniquely successful.
