Greetings, all...
Hope this message finds you doing well...
I'm not sure if the news has reached there yet but Tassajara is in the clear. The fire past through yesterday afternoon and the five people who stayed behind are all safe. There were some minor losses (part of the compost shed, what's known as the Bird House, the pool bathroom, some wood piles) but nothing major. The efforts made by all of the students, staff and fire professionals in preparing the buildings and grounds really paid off. Word has it that Tassajara is an oasis of green amidst the charred remains that surround it...
However, my understanding is that Jamesburg (which is the base camp for Tassajara and at the opposite end of the 14-mile road that leads to it) is not out of the woods yet, so please keep them in your thoughts...
My apologies if this info has already been disseminated. Take care and I'll check in with a personal update soon...
Cheers,
Chris

My sadness and concern is mixed with a deep sense of pride and reverence for the work of our friend Colin Gipson. Colin is one of the people who stayed with the monastery when it was evacuated. I was completely unsurprised that Colin was one of the ones who chose to stay, and similarly unsurprised that he is now one of the people entrusted with a daunting task by the S.F. Zen Center.
Colin grew up as a Zen student in our temple. He is one of the most down-to-earth, straightforward, and capable people I know. I haven't talked to Colin in a long time, but consider him a good friend and an inspiration in how to practice while being myself in my given life. I trust the flames will know better than to mess with him.
