greetings, the time here at AZC has opened my heart and i found a new sanga that i love. Not knowing what to expect , i still remember reading barbara's message on the web site, neda letting me in the back door which started my retreat at the AZC. that will have to be another email..... now i would like to talk about the wonderful GARDEN where i spent many hours sifting through my life, while the birds sang and the squirrils chattered. i am inviting all of you to come and enjoy the garden and sign up for a 5-20 minute job each week. the compost bins are all ready. you have heard of the crooked cuke well the two compost bins that i built are very crooked but they work! ronny donated the wood and kojin helped saw the lumber, thank you both. the signs on them tell the story of what they need and the signs are movable. i think mark expressed interest in being in charge of the bins?????????? the best book to read is
wendy johnsons GARDENING AT THE DRAGONS GATE, its in the library and has a great section on composting. its sort of like cooking , everyone has their own ideas. quotes from the dragons gate: buddha said," all conditioned things are of a nature to decay." wendy said: page 129, "everything that is or was once alive will compost in the compost pile and turn into black gold: kitchen scrapes, lawn clippings, most animal manures and bones, dust and lint and human hair clippings, tear moistened kleenex and old love letters. all these ingredients will decay and ripen into humus in the compost pile." the book is a treasure that i plan to purchase when i am home. please take a look...On Thursday we will show you how to participate in the AZC garden.
1- water flowers , herbs and vegtable with gentle hose nozzle, like rain ........ please conserve our precious water. mulching is another way of conserving water!
2- mulch between rows and plants using our abundance of leaves, also some more behind the shed
3- wednesday or some regular day each week, turn the compost bin and water it , i divide into quarters and just rearrange each quarter, most important ingredients for a sucessful composting; AIR AND WATER.
4- empty compost bucket from the kitchen into the bin that says empty bucket here, and then cover with leaves or dirt. rinse bucket at outdoor sink on the way back to kitchen!
6- thursday or the week day that you pick, fertilize with miracle grow, usually i am organic but sense we have it might as well use it. use on veg , herbs and flowers. WEEKLY
7 -mix the seaweed solution for another fertilizer , again follow directions and WEEKLY too, not the same day , space the feedings of seaweed and miracle grow
8- sift the dirts to the left of the garden entrance, put sifted composted soil in the pile in the middle of the garden and use it to enrich garden and plant new seeds or plants.
COMPOSTING IS VERY ZEN / LEAVE NO TRACE i love playing in the garden and mixing the compost up, checking out the worms and other critters, listening , smelling and just being in the garden space. i hope you all enjoy and communicate with the garden. also wendys book is awesome!!! each job is only about 5-15 minutes depending on what you choose. also i am sure that everyone will have their own contribution, the above stuff is just suggestions. the new garden volunteers will create new ways to tend the garden. ENJOY, kaishin
